About the TIF Procedure

The TIF procedure (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) represents the next step in the field of minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of GERD.

Benefits of the TIF procedure:

  • No scars, due to incisionless approach
  • Faster recovery, since there is no internal cutting of the natural anatomy
  • Fewer adverse events and complications than conventional surgery
  • Can be revised if required

The TIF procedure is performed through the mouth without incisions. A surgeon utilizes the EsophyX device to reconstruct the valve between the esophagus and the stomach and restore the body’s natural protection against reflux.

TIF is an acronym:

  • Transoral – The procedure is performed from within the GI tract, through the patient’s mouth
  • Incisionless – There are no incisions, resulting in reduced risk and discomfort, faster recovery, and no scars
  • Fundoplication – The antireflux valve is reconstructed by wrapping the upper portion of the stomach (fundus) around the esophagus

While many patients may be dissatisfied with the medicines available to treat their GERD symptoms, some are wary of traditional antireflux surgery. This concern may be due to the incisions required, the associated risks, and undesirable long-term side effects such as bloating, trouble swallowing, and increased flatulence.

The TIF procedure bridges the treatment gap between medication and more invasive surgery. Because the procedure is performed entirely through the patient’s mouth, there are no abdominal incisions and no scars from the procedure.

To date, over 18,000 TIF procedures have been performed worldwide.

Anticipated risks with the TIF procedure include temporary discomforts such as sore throat, shoulder pain, difficulty swallowing, nausea, or vomiting.

How the TIF Procedure Works to Relieve GERD

The TIF procedure with the EsophyX device reconstructs the antireflux valve at the entrance from the esophagus into the stomach. This valve opens and closes as food is swallowed and acts as a physical barrier to reflux. By preventing reflux, the procedure eliminates both the acidic symptoms of reflux, such as heartburn and sore throat, and the non-acid, atypical symptoms, such as asthma, chronic cough, and regurgitation.

Similar to laparoscopic antireflux surgery, the TIF procedure is used to treat the underlying anatomical cause of GERD by reconstructing the dynamics of the body’s natural antireflux barrier.
